MSU's Upward Bound Program motivates talented high school students (9th through 12th grade) to complete high school and enter a postsecondary educational institution. Upward Bound students come from families where no parent has completed a postsecondary degree. Upward Bound serves 80 students, 2/3 of whom are low income, from the three Lansing area high schools: Eastern, Everett, and Sexton. Students are bussed to the MSU campus on Monday afternoons during the school year where staff and tutors assist with developing the necessary academic and social skills to prepare the students for college life. Mentoring and job shadowing programs during the school year address the students' academic process, career opportunities, and future goals and plans. Also included are field trips to cultural events and leadership seminars. These activities and resources offered over the school year complement a six-week on-campus summer program, two weeks of which involve living in an MSU residence hall.
